Entry 60

Would it be true to say that national character is largely influenced by climate ?
I cannot say it is always true and all people's character is always made and influenced by the climate of the area they have been born and lived for a time, but it is largely true ...
I've seen that most of the people who have lived in dry areas where there has been little water like deserts are strict, severe, rigid and inflexible ...
One of my relatives has been born in a dry area ; he's so mean & stingy; he always tries to stock up on everything and is always worried that he may not find food, ... later in his life; he is not generous and he doesn't use or share his possessions with others easily ...
I don't want to say that his stinginess is only because of his hometown or its climate, but I think he's been mostly influenced by the situation of the area he has been born and has lived ...
In his hometown people have always had to stock up on things, because of the dry weather, lack of water , ...
In some cold countries like Sweden, Norway, ... people's character is somehow like the weather of that country ; the people there are mostly cold & insensitive in character ...
It's also true for the people whose home town is dry countries like Arabian countries; the people in these countries are mostly strict, severe & rough in character ...
I can't say what I've said is true all the time & for everyone, but I think it's mostly true ...

Bonjour Chackavak, Congratulations for this very interesting subject. I, too, was pondering from time to time about the relation between landscape and character. Three of the important world religions have been created by people living in the desert, the Jewish, the Christian and the Moslem faith. And I cannot help thinking that the ever present tendency to fanatism and a total absence of sens of humour is a consequence of this dry and parched origin............ May I correct you however in one point: the people from the cold northern countries are not as cold as they seem to be. Mostly, they are only very reserved and it takes them a long time to thaw and button up. This achieved, one cannot have a more faithful and truer friend than someone coming out of the cold. As to my very personal experience, I have the impression that the most nasty, hypocrite and coward people frequently live in the most beautiful countryside. Why this is so I don't know.

Hi Georg Thanks for your comment I do agree with what you said about the character of people who live in the most beautiful countryside; maybe this is because of the fact that they have never experienced the dangers and the harshness of the other parts of the nature & have become somehow spoiled

Hi Chackavak, Sorry for not being able to check your weblong recently. I have been too busy. This idea that you've mentioned above is somehow correct, somehow not correct! You know why? See, the climate, itself, does not make people's character, this is the economic situation of the climate in the area which makes the culture of the society in which people become like what you mentioned. This, even influences in the political points of views of the society too. As, George has mentioned (and I think it is true) even the Abrahamian religions like Jew, Christianity and Islam's faith are influence by the climate and the culture which is made out of that climate. If you look at the Arab people's dress and clothings you will see it. All the Arab people who wear DASHDAASHE (long white gowns underneath there is no trousers) and a scarf on their head (not hair!) are trying to get rid of hot sun which sticks its warmth into their head. That is the reason that they used to put something on their head to prevent the sun's heat.....and then, through the TIME it becomes a tradition. If, now a days you look at these Arabs, you see them still wearing the same DASHDAASHE (long white gowns) and the CHAFIYE (white/red or white/black scarf) over their head even in a very cool malls of Saudia Arabia or Dubai or....the places which is cool by airconditioners. I want to say that, the climate, those old days, not now, was a reasong for the society - and of course its people - to be under its influence, but I think now a days that the world is changing and the climate is being under control of the science, these habits start to be forgotten..... Bye, Nalley
